Authors and Wants (10 min video) (PDF - 7 page assignment)

In this lesson, I talk about what Authors consider when identifying what their Hero wants. A Hero's Want must be active and fuels his/her arc of personal growth.

Your Hero's WANT drives the action in your story (life), because it fuels the choices s/he makes! In storytelling, the Hero may, or may not be aware of this Want - but, the Author knows that it is driving the Hero's choices.

You're going to excavate an Active Want for your Hero in these worksheets below. By identifying an Active Want for your Hero, I'm prodding the Author in you to view your Hero self in an active role, not a passive, victim role.

In the rest of the Module, I'll guide you to look at resistance and fears your Hero experiences. With an awareness of those variables, your Author can review your Hero's Active Want and adjust, modify, or be more specific with its wording to name the final, Core Want for your About Sentence.
